Muntons Gold

Muntons Gold Range

The four Muntons Gold carry-handle kit boxes on a wooden bench — Old English Bitter, India Pale Ale, Imperial Stout and Continental Pilsner — each with GOLD in thin gold lettering, the O a glass of the beer with the Muntons script across it.

The Gold range is Muntons' answer to the German Reinheitsgebot — the old purity law that allowed nothing but malt, hops, water and yeast in a beer. That is all that goes into these kits. No sugar to add, no cheap syrup padding out the can — each carry-handle box holds 3kg of hopped malt extract across two cans, with a yeast sachet, making 40 pints at approximately 4.5% whatever the style.

Muntons are first and foremost a commercial maltster supplying breweries around the world, so they know exactly what malt suits each style. It shows in these kits, which is why Gold has been one of our recommended ranges for years. The beers we stock:

  • Old English Bitter — a full bodied bitter in the Victorian mould, best at cellar temperature; improves with six months in the bottle. 4.5%
  • India Pale Ale — the classic export style, pale and well hopped, brewed to the strength the troops drank it at rather than the gravity it survived the voyage at. 4.5%
  • Imperial Stout — velvet black with a distinctive dry bitterness under a creamy head, best served chilled. 4.5%
  • Continental Pilsner — light and delicate European lager, hop bitterness balanced against the malt, best served properly cold. 4.5%

If you want hop-forward craft styles instead, look at the Muntons Flagship range; for a cheaper way in, the Connoisseurs kits with a kilo of sugar do a fine job.
