John Bull Standard Class

John Bull Standard Class

The four John Bull Standard Class kit cans standing in a row on a wooden bench: Traditional English Ale, India Pale Ale, Best Bitter in Union Jack livery, and Country Cider.

The Standard Class is John Bull's single-can range: 1.8kg of hopped malt extract under the bulldog label, with the yeast sachet under the lid. Add 1kg of sugar and water and you have 40 pints. The range also runs to a 1.75kg Country Cider, made up the same way.

Like all sugar kits they make a lighter bodied beer than the all malt ranges, but they are dependable value for money — and a Beer Kit Enhancer in place of the sugar firms them up. About a week to ferment, then ten days or so in the bottle or barrel.

The kits we stock:

  • Traditional English Ale — the original of the range; amber ale in the navy bulldog livery.
  • Best Bitter — a limited-edition Best of British can in Union Jack colours.
  • IPA — an English-style India Pale Ale, same navy can as the ale.
  • Country Cider — the odd one out: a 1.75kg cider kit rather than a beer.
